Both SAT and ACT are standardized tests accepted by universities and colleges in the United States of America offering undergraduate courses. SAT tests the student’s proficiency in the areas of Mathematics, Critical Reading, and Writing. The exam is further subdivided into a number of subject tests- English Literature, History (U.S. or World), Language (Chinese, French, Hebrew, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Spanish or German), Math (Level 1 or Level 2), and Science (Biology-Ecological, Biology-Molecular, Chemistry or Physics). Some highly selective US universities require the student to submit scores from at least two SAT Subject Tests, depending on the course they have opted for. The students are advised to thoroughly identify the admission prerequisites of the colleges of their choice as different universities lay down different requirements regarding the SAT Subject Tests.
ACT tests the student’s proficiency in the areas of English, Maths, Reading, and Science. The exam also includes an additional writing section which has been made mandatory by some, but not all, universities. The ACT exam is similar to the SAT exam in the sense that these are two main examinations that American colleges accept for pursuing undergraduation from the country. For a long time, the SAT was the only exam prevalent in the US but over the years, ACT’s popularity has grown exponentially.
Each of the four subject areas in the ACT are scored on a scale of 1 to 36. These scores are then averaged to obtain the student’s composite score, which also ranges from 1 to 36.
The SAT scoring is done section-wise. Points are earned on a 200-800 scale in each of the two sections- Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW), and Math. Making for a maximum of 1600 points in total. SAT subject tests are also scored on a 200-800 scale with 1 point for each correct answer, and 录 point being deducted for each question you answer incorrectly.
